Ayungon Youth Learn About Mining and Environmental Stewardship at Camp
Young leaders from five barangays in Ayungon, Negros Oriental recently participated in an Environmental Youth Camp focused on mining and environmental awareness. Held on June 27, 2024, the camp was a collaborative effort between the Heirs of Arturo Zayco (HAZ) and Helix Resources Development Corporation (HRDC) as part of their ongoing Information and Education Campaign (IEC).
Enthusiastic members of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) from Barangays Maaslum, Tampokon 1, Gomentoc, Calagcalag, and Anibong attended the event. Experts from the attached offices of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Central Visayas such as the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), and Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) shared their knowledge and experience. HRDC also presented information on its mining operations, social development programs, and environmental activities.
A key focus of the camp was educating the youth about the importance of mining. MGB 7 Engr. Ramcie S. Brilliante led discussions on the origins of mining, the geological formation of rocks and minerals, their various uses, and the processes of prospecting and exploration. He also highlighted the benefits of mining, including its contribution to income generation and global economic development through metallurgical processing. Furthermore, participants learned about mining laws related to mine safety, environmental protection, and social development within local communities.
By gaining an understanding of the different stages of mining, the young participants were encouraged to pursue higher education, particularly in related fields. The camp emphasized that financial constraints should not be a barrier to achieving their academic goals. This initiative aimed to empower the next generation with knowledge and inspire them to contribute to responsible resource management and sustainable development in their communities. (IO/MGB7)
