MGB-7 Conducts Successful IEC Campaign on VRA Results and REMs Training Workshop in 3 Cebu LGUs
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) 7 concluded its 2024 Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign series by conducting a “Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (VRA) Results” presentation and a “Training-Workshop on Understanding Risk Exposure Maps” in the municipalities of Ginatilan, Alegria, and the City Government of Toledo last October.
These one-day sessions were designed to equip local government officials, disaster risk management personnel, department heads, and community leaders with the tools to assess and mitigate geological hazards in their communities. The training featured presentations on MGB-7’s recent VRA studies, offering participants detailed insights into local geohazards. Risk maps and data analysis highlighted areas in each locality prone to landslides, flooding, and other hazards, enabling participants to visualize and strategically plan around these vulnerabilities.
Raising Awareness and Technical Capacity on Risk Exposure
The IEC campaign aimed to boost awareness and provide technical guidance on Risk Exposure Analysis, emphasizing its importance in comprehensive land use, development, and disaster risk management planning. This initiative aligns with MGB’s National Geohazard Assessment Program, which supports local governments in effectively managing geohazard risks.
Key Topics Covered
During the workshop, MGB-7 experts discussed:
- Understanding Geologic Hazards
- Introduction to MGB’s National Geohazard Assessment Program and the Updated Geohazard Susceptibility Map
- Overview of Vulnerability and Risk Assessment and Risk Exposure Analysis
- Production and Interpretation of Risk Exposure Maps
- Hands-on Workshop on Risk Exposure Assessment
- Gender Equality in Disaster Preparedness and Response
Turnover of REMs
Following each presentation, participants engaged in discussions to address issues and concerns relevant to their respective areas. At the end of the workshop, MGB-7 provided each LGU with VRA technical reports and sets of Risk Exposure Maps, aiding their future planning efforts for Comprehensive Land Use Plans (CLUPs) and disaster preparedness strategies.
MGB-7 acknowledged the strong support from the LGUs of Ginatilan, Alegria, and the City Government of Toledo, particularly their MDRRM officers, for the successful conduct of the IEC campaign and training workshop. (Heart Rizarri/MGB7)
