MGB 7 Conducts Public Consultation for Proposed Mineral Reservation in Siaton, Negros Oriental

A team from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) 7, conducted a second public consultation in Barangay Bonawon, Siaton, Negros Oriental on September 27, 2024. This follows a similar public consultation held earlier this year in the Municipality of Balamban, Cebu.

The consultation aimed to inform the local community about the potential benefits and risks associated with the proposed mineral reservation and the minerals present in the area. MGB 7 representatives, including geologists, a legal officer, and engineers, were present to address questions and concerns from the public.

“We believe that this proposed mineral reservation has the potential to contribute to the economic development not just in your area but for the country as well,” said, John Christopher Santos, Senior Geologist.

During the consultation, JC Santos and Legal Officer Atty. Gleen A. Revilla-Maravilla presented detailed information about the proposed mineral reservation, including the potential environmental and social impacts.

Residents of Barangay Bonawon expressed mixed reactions to the proposal. Some expressed concerns about potential environmental damage and social disruption, while others saw future economic growth.

MGB7 officials assured the public that the agency is committed to informing the community about the proposal. They also emphasized the importance of conducting thorough environmental impact assessments and adhering to strict environmental regulations.

The public consultation was part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to promote transparency and accountability in the mining industry. By engaging with local communities, MGB7 aims to build trust and ensure that mining activities are carried out responsibly.

The team was led by Supervising Geologist Dr. Dennis Gerald A. Aleta, along with Engr. Anfernee L. Malinao, Mining Engineer; Kurt Russel B. Golindang, Geologist; and Cynthia V. Cisneros, Planning Officer. (Heart Rizarri/IO MGB7)
