A PORTION of the road in Brgy. Agsungot, Cebu City needs to be renovated following the landslide that occurred in the area.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Central Visayas has recommended that the Cebu City government widen the road and install slope protection and benching to prevent the same incident from happening again.

Since Aug. 15, 2020, a series of landslides have occurred in Sitio Lower Agsungot, prompting the City to close the road temporarily to clear the rocks that fell on the road.

“As per the recommendation of the MGB, there’s a need for the City government to come up with mitigating measures and engineering intervention with regard to the design of the road because like what I said, it’s very steep so there must be an intervention,” said Cebu City Councilor Jerry Guardo, chairman of the infrastructure committee.

Guardo said among the recommendations made by the MGB 7 is for the City to first act on looking for an alternative route since it is still not safe for public transportation vehicles to pass by the area.

In the meantime, Guardo said, more traffic enforcers will be deployed in the area to help in manning the traffic.

Guardo said personnel of the City Assessor’s Office have been deployed in the area to negotiate with the owners of the properties that may be affected by the widening.

During the meeting of the City officials and the MGB 7 on Aug. 27, the MGB noted that the road construction “was very steep.”

Guardo said there was also a river below the road.

He said the City Engineering personnel are set to complete the road design by the first week of September. / JJL
