MGB 7 Wraps Up Groundbreaking QGIS Training, Empowering Central Visayas Mining Sector

Marking the successful completion of its scheduled capacity-building initiatives for the year, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region VII (MGB 7), through its Mine Safety, Environment, and Social Development Division (MSESDD), wrapped up the final batch of the Intensive QGIS Technical Workshop for Geospatial Reporting and Compliance.
This final cohort concludes a three-batch training series designed to strengthen the technical proficiency of mining company personnel across Central Visayas. The initiative responds directly to DENR mandates requiring the deployment, updating, and maintenance of standardized geospatial shapefiles—including tree plantations, active mining areas, and environmental monitoring features—in strict compliance with DENR and MGB standards.
After completing the established training program, participants who finished the 11-lecture, 10-exercise curriculum received their Certificates of Completion during the culmination ceremony. The session wrapped up intensive hands-on instruction covering:
- Field Data Integration & Digitization: Transforming GPS, mobile, and drone survey data into compliant vector features and establishing standardized PRS92 attribute tables.
- Advanced Remote Sensing & Cartography: Processing drone photogrammetry, generating NDVI thematic maps for vegetation health monitoring, and drafting professional layout maps.
The MSESDD expressed its heartfelt gratitude to the resource speaker, Engr. Jhon Carlo Aporbo, for his dedication, exceptional patience, and invaluable technical expertise shared throughout the module discussions and hands-on exercises.
Speaking on behalf of Regional Director Al Emil Berador, MGB 7 commended the final batch of participants for their dedication and thanked all participating mining companies for supporting this year’s regional geospatial capability-building effort.
With the 2026 training schedule officially completed, MGB 7 reaffirms its commitment to providing technical guidance to industry partners, fostering transparent environmental management, and raising the standard for responsible mining practices across Central Visayas. (IO/Heart Rizarri)
