MGB 7 Honors the Retirement of Engr. Edward S. Malahay

After a truly distinguished career spanning over 45 years of exemplary public service, Engr. Edward Saltarin Malahay — or “Sir Wardy,” as he is fondly called — has officially retired from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office VII (MGB 7). Known for his youthful energy and active spirit, he leaves behind a remarkable legacy built on integrity, technical excellence, and unwavering dedication as Chief of the Monitoring and Technical Services Section under the Mine Management Division.
A Career Defined by Service and Expertise
Engr. Malahay began his journey with MGB 7 on October 13, 1979. Over the decades, he rose through the ranks, holding several key engineering positions and becoming a cornerstone of the Bureau. He was instrumental in championing responsible and sustainable mining operations in Central Visayas.
His expertise was forged even before his MGB-7 tenure, before joining the Bureau, Engr. Malahay honed his professional skills at Atlas Mining Corporation, where he gained experience serving as a Section Manager (Underground Mining).
A testament to his commitment to his field, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering (BS Min. E.) in 1984 from Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT), graduating as one of the top 10 in his batch. In 2016, demonstrating his dedication to further studies, he undertook a Master in Public Administration program at the University of the Visayas.
Legacy of Warmth and Mentorship
MGB 7 recently celebrated his retirement, honoring him for his services and invaluable contributions to the Bureau. Beyond his technical achievements, Sir Wardy was cherished for his warmth and camaraderie. Colleagues fondly describe him as well-mannered and generous, but perhaps best known as the Bureau’s “entertainer” or “official singer.”
He never failed to bring laughter and good cheer to events, trainings, and seminars. True to his thoughtful nature, he was also the ever-reliable provider of snacks, often bringing food or “pan” (bread) for his colleagues to share—a simple, heartfelt gesture that reflected his deep kindness and community spirit.
As Engr. Edward S. Malahay embarks on this new chapter of life, MGB-7 extends its deepest appreciation. His powerful example of excellence, integrity, and warmth will continue to inspire present and future generations of the bureau’s mining engineers. (/IO)
